The year began with the adoption of our guiding principle, “Be the Exception.” This powerful slogan set the tone for our endeavors, encouraging us to undertake unique challenges and seize opportunities that others might overlook.
Spring into Action: The Local Food Purchasing Program
One of our key initiatives launched in the spring was the Local Food Purchasing Program. While the program’s outcomes weren’t exactly as anticipated, it became a crucial learning tool. It helped us understand the challenges farmers face in marketing their products and identify ways to bridge these gaps.
Summer Summit: A Meeting of Minds
The highlight of our year was undoubtedly the summer summit. This event saw over 200 farmers and ranchers from across Texas come together to share ideas, experiences, and forge connections. We discussed crucial topics such as storage generation, business creation, and the monetization of land, all integral to modern farming.
Looking Forward to 2024: Innovation and Expansion
As we step into 2024, we’re not just carrying forward our lessons from 2023; we’re expanding on them with innovative programs and initiatives.
The Soil to Profit Incubator: A Springboard for Agribusiness
One of the most exciting developments for 2024 is the launch of our Soil to Profit Incubator program. Aimed at creating more agribusinesses, this program will provide practical learning experiences in two tracks: vegetable only and vegetable with livestock. This isn’t just about learning the ‘what’ but mastering the ‘how-to’ of successful agribusiness.
Cultivating Leadership: Training the Trainers
Another significant focus will be on leadership development. By identifying and training future leaders, we aim to embrace the “each one, teach one” concept, spreading knowledge and empowerment throughout our community.
Business Accelerator: Fast-Tracking Success
An extension of our incubator, the Business Accelerator program, is set to provide turnkey market opportunities for our farmers. This program aims to establish direct wholesale relationships with schools, hospitals, and universities, providing a significant boost to our farmers’ market presence.
Overcoming Barriers: Land Access Initiatives
Recognizing the challenge of land access, particularly for urban gardeners and those looking to scale up, we’re dedicated to creating opportunities and removing barriers. This initiative will be a game changer for many in our community.
